Falls affect us all—whether personally or someone we love or care about. Every second of every day an older adult falls. In 2024, more than one in four older adults reported falling and more than 41,000 older adults died as a result of falls—that’s 74 older adults every day. There are simple steps you can take to prevent falls and decrease falls risks. Did you know that falling is NOT a normal part of aging? The N.C. Cooperative Extension Office is committed to empowering all older adults in Granville County to reduce their risk of falls, which are one of the greatest causes of serious injuries and death among people over age 65. Join the Extension Office at the Thornton Library in Oxford on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. for a workshop on Fall Prevention to get more information on how you can prevent slips, trips, and falls. The event will feature a new online falls risk assessment tool available at no cost to individuals across the country. Visitors to www.ncoa.org/FallsFreeCheckUp can complete a short survey that screens them for the most common falls risk factors.

Here is a simple recipe for the upcoming fall months from Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Baked Parmesan Zucchini

4 zucchini, cut crosswise into quarters and then cut lengthwise into sticks

½ cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated tastes best

¼ tsp each dried thyme and dried oregano

½ tsp dried basil

¼ tsp garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

2 Tbsp olive oil

2 Tbsp fresh parsley leaves, chopped

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat a cooling rack with non-stick spray and place on a baking sheet. Set aside. In a small bowl, combine cheese and seasonings. Stir. Brush zucchini with oil and sprinkle with Parmesan mixture. Bake until tender about 15 minutes. Then broil 2-3 minutes until crisp and brown.
