N.C. Cooperative Extension of Granville and Vance Counties in collaboration with the NC Forest Service of Granville and Vance Counties is offering a wonderful natural resource series titled 'Getting to Know Your Land'! This series will offer everything from plant identification to pond, pasture, and woodlot management, and is designed to offer a broad overview of practices to help landowners get the most benefit from their natural resources.
The classes will be on selected Fridays from 2–4 p.m. during October, November, and December. Locations will vary with each class, please see the full schedule with topics, dates, locations, and registration information below.
October 1, 2021 - Plant ID Field Day - Location: Granville Athletic Park (GAP) - This class will help you be able to identify the different species of plants that are on your property. This will help you make better decisions as to which species are beneficial to you.
October 15, 2021 - Pond Management - Location: Vance County Regional Farmers Market (210 Southpark Dr., Henderson, NC) - This class will cover pond weeds and their control measures, as well as other pond management practices to ensure you have a healthy pond.
October 29, 2021 - Pasture Management - Location: To Be Determined - During this session we will discuss pasture fertility management, weed identification and control measures, and grazing.
November 19, 2021 - Woodlot Management/Chainsaw Safety - Location: Granville County Expo Center (4185 US 15, Oxford, NC) - We will discuss the basics of managing the woodland areas of your property. Regardless of the size, there are certain things to consider in order to get the most benefit from your wooded areas. We will also discuss the safety procedures of using a chainsaw responsibly.
*Please Note Date Change - December 10, 2021 - Forestry Field Day - Location: To Be Determined - Join us as we discuss the procedures of forest management and aspects that are crucial for a productive forest management plan. We will also visit a forest production site.
December 17, 2021 - Taxes and Cost Share Opportunities - Location - Vance County Regional Farmers Market (210 Southpark Dr., Henderson, NC) - Although not always thought about taxes are a big part of managing our property and your natural resources. You will learn about opportunities to improve your natural resources through cost-share programs.
All classes will be from 2–4 p.m.
