Celebrating Older Americans Month

Established in 1963, Older Americans Month (OAM) is celebrated every May. Led by a federal agency, the Administration for Community Living (ACL), OAM is a time to recognize older Americans' contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm commitments to serving the older adults in our communities. This year’s theme, "Powered by Connection," focuses on the profound impact that meaningful connections have on the well-being and health of older adults — a relationship underscored by the U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community. It's not just about having someone to chat with. It's about the transformative potential of community engagement in enhancing mental, physical, and emotional well-being. By recognizing and nurturing the role that connectedness plays, we can mitigate issues like loneliness, ultimately promoting healthy aging for more Americans.

To help people learn more about topics concerning our older adults, we are bringing back our Aging with Gusto conference on Tuesday, May 21st at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford. There will be time to visit booths from a variety of organizations, attend 2 workshops, receive a goody bag and possibly a door prize. It is free to attend, and registration is due May 16!! Enchilada Casserole – serves 12


  • 1 (28oz) can green enchilada sauce
  • 2 cups cooked or canned beans (pinto, black, kidney), rinsed and drained
  • 3 cups cooked brown rice
  • 1 (15oz) can whole kernel corn, drained, or 1 ½ cups frozen corn
  • 8 whole wheat tortillas
  • 2 cups low-fat cheese, grated
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, mix sauce, beans, rice and corn. Place half of the tortillas on the bottom of baking dish. Add half of the mixture on top of the tortillas. Layer tortillas on top of the mixture. Place the remaining bean and rice mixture on top of the tortillas. Top with low-fat cheese. Cover baking dish with foil. Bake in oven for 10 minutes. Remove cover and bake for 15 to 20 minutes more. Cut into 12 servings.
