Three-Year Popcorn Germination Study
From 2017-2020, a three-year germination study was done on 30 varieties that survived the three years of tough weather patterns such as drought and too much rain. The number one popcorn variety was a novelty type called shades of blue with a three-year average of 93.8% germination. The second place had a tie with ARZM-06 from Argentina at 93.0% germination and Argentine Group 2 at 93.0% germination. Third place was two varieties out of Brazil, 2785 and 2823, both having 92% germination. Also tied for 2nd place was the popular variety Ladyfinger with a 92% germination. Other varieties that did well were Shades of Brown at 91% germination and Cherokee Long at 90% germination. The plot average for over 30 varieties was 83% germination overall. Continued work will be done for a fourth year.
