Hurricane – Be Prepared
As we move into hurricane season, make sure generators are up and running and equipment that needs to be placed out of the rain and wind are secured. Check out greenhouses to make sure they are secured. The biggest concern I have is wind. With the drought season, many plants are weak. With tobacco, to much rain and wind will send leaves and stalks to the ground. Corn could be snapped at the base and in the middle. Get out and check fields as soon as the storm is over and report damage to proper entities – USDA, Extension, Crop Insurance. This has been a tough year and we are starting hurricane season with challenges in an already challenging year.
