Dr. Blake Brown of the Department of Ag and Resource Economics at NC State University has shared information that the USDA has announced that farmers can apply for direct payments through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP). USDA-FSA offices are notifying farmers directly about this program.

In addition to farm program crops (e.g. corn, cotton), direct payments will be available to producers of livestock and specialty crops. These farmers may not have participated in FSA programs in the past, so they should take note and inquire about the program.

USDA-FSA will start applications on May 26, 2020. While the application process has not started, farmers should start gathering and understanding your farm’s recent sales and inventory.

Full details can be found on the USDA website. The USDA news release is here:  USDA Announces Details of Direct Assistance to Farmers through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program
